HAND & UPPER LIMBS
The Division of Hand & Upper Limb Surgery of the Bone & Joint Institute deals with all cases of hand, wrist and upper limbs. The department treats scaphoid fractures with a high success rate and deals with rare conditions like perilunate dislocations as well as complex cases like crush injuries of the hand. Also, surgeries to correct deformities of rheumatoid arthritis, brachial plexus injuries of adults as well as those of the paediatric age group are done.
The department can also attend to tendon transfer surgeries in cases of loss of muscular function, restoring enough function for a patient to carry out his/her regular activities without pain or disability.
Rare conditions like glomus tumours of the hand are also operated upon, and the department has a robust case series of such rare conditions.
Ilizarov surgery is an intricate art in the field of orthopaedic surgery. It is used in the correction of congenital and acquired skeletal deformities, in the complicated and failed cases of orthopaedic trauma and the correction of limb length discrepancy.
There are very few surgeons who are proficient in this art of Ilizarov surgery. Many surgeons are put off by the complexity, long duration of treatment needed for results and by the inconvenience caused to the patient by the implants used. However, in many cases, Ilizarov surgery is the only or final option available to patients.
The team has performed successful Ilizarov surgeries for very complex trauma cases in patients who are victims of bomb blasts, etc. Some of these being very challenging cases, for the severity of skeletal destruction.
The Joint Replacement department comprises of a large, experienced and skilled doctors who perform around joint replacements (Knees and Hips) every day. Primary and Revision Total Knee Replacements and Hip Replacements are carried out on a daily basis. Primary total knee replacements are done using the latest and best implants available in the market, catering to the individual needs of the patient and also suitable to his or her budget. This includes high flexion designs, ultra-congruent implants with mobile or fixed inserts.
Total hip arthroplasties are not only performed for the straightforward cases of osteoarthritis but also for complex cases like:
- Post-traumatic arthritis of the hip after acetabular fractures
- Ankylosing spondylitis
- Heterotopic ossification of the hip joint
- Revision total hip arthroplasties
The arthroplasty team is backed by a dedicated team of support staff to offer extensive counselling to the patients undergoing joint replacement surgery, both before and after surgery. A dedicated team of physiotherapists is available to provide their care & services both within the hospital premises and also with personal visits to the patient’s’ home. With the significant number of joint replacements being performed daily, Samraksha Hospitals for Joint Replacement Surgery realises its duty towards good clinical practice and clinical development.

The staff is dedicated to providing the care that children with musculoskeletal disorders need to restore function and to correct deformities – to normal or near normal – so that they may lead a normal life. Good screening programs enable appropriate intervention at the right age with a proper follow-up to get the best results. PELVIC ACETABULAR SURGERY
The Division of Pelvic acetabular Surgery operates and treats complex fractures of the acetabulum and pelvis, especially in polytrauma scenarios. In orthopaedic trauma, pelvic acetabular trauma is associated with the greatest morbidity and mortality. At Samraksha Hospitals, we have consultants with the needed skills and support staff to deliver positive outcomes to the victims of these injuries.
Total hip replacements are performed in cases of arthritis after acetabular fractures which are associated with acetabular bone loss and post-traumatic arthritis. This is also possible because of the availability of specialised implants to deal with any case scenario that may be presented to the hospital.
SHOULDER ARTHROSCOPY & SPORTS INJURY
The specialised Shoulder, Arthroscopy, and Sports Injury division has the mandate to attend to cases of shoulder resurfacing, shoulder hemiarthroplasty, reverse hemiarthroplasty, rotator cuff repairs, labral repairs and arthroscopic ACL reconstructions.
Arthroscopic surgeries of the knee like ACL reconstruction using single and double bundle technique, PCL reconstructions, multi-ligament surgeries are carried out on a regular basis. The division is occasionally visited by international surgeons to observe the vast array of arthroscopic surgeries.
An excellent post-operative physiotherapy department is the prerequisite of orthopaedic surgery. The division is supported by a team of dedicated physiotherapists trained in shoulder and sports injuries who help patients recover promptly from ligament and sports injuries.
TRAUMA SURGERY & ACCIDENT CARE
The trauma department is comprised of 3 units led by senior consultants supported by junior consultants, registrars and DNB post-graduates. This streamlining and unit wise distribution allows focused attention to the patients and ensures that the patient always meets the same team of doctors on follow-up. This reduces the chances of communication gap and establishes a good rapport with the surgeons & patients.
The surgeons of the trauma department are skilled in handling complex trauma and accident cases including peri-articular fractures, periprosthetic fractures, polytrauma cases and pelvic & acetabular fractures amongst others, performing at least five trauma surgeries every day.
The department is well-equipped to handle and manage polytrauma cases with multiple extremity fractures. This is thanks to the round-the-clock availability of our dedicated and experienced anaesthesia, ICU and nursing teams.
Complicated cases of nonunions, malunions and implant failures are referred to the department from all over the Country and are managed by expert consultants and their teams.
The trauma team is supported by experienced plastic and vascular surgeons who provide to patients with associated neurovascular injuries from the time of admission till their discharge.
